What is your interest in the Creative Arlington beta community?
As Director of Communications for Arlington County, I (and my team!) promote the many wonderful activities and opportunities available here in our corner of the world.
How do you or would like to use your imagination and original ideas to enrich the economy and culture in Arlington, and beyond?
Arlington is a wonderful, vibrant microcosm -- I love being able to get around without a car and to have access to so many rich experiences. I do what I can to share information and promote the community. .
Diana Sun was named Director of Communications and Public Affairs in 2003. She manages and directs all external and internal communications for Arlington County. In the 2008 Resident Satisfaction Survey, residents gave Arlington's communications among the top marks in the nation -- six points higher than in 2004 and 21 points above the national average.
Previously, Ms. Sun served as Vice President, Corporate Communications for Capital One. Prior, President Clinton appointed Ms. Sun as deputy director of Public Affairs for the International Trade Administration, helping U.S. businesses export products and services. Before joining the Administration, Ms. Sun was vice president of Fleishman-Hillard, Inc., where she managed national media, specialized communications programs, news events and advocacy advertising for corporations, associations and coalitions.
Prior to joining Fleishman-Hillard, Ms. Sun worked in crisis communications and corporate and financial media relations at Hill & Knowlton. Before that, she worked for PaineWebber, Inc., first as an investment broker in Washington, D.C., and then as a portfolio manager in the firm’s New York City headquarters.
Ms. Sun has won a Silver Anvil award from the Public Relations Society of America; a Thoth award from PRSA’s Washington chapter; a Gold Circle award from the American Society of Association Executives; a Creativity in Public Relations Award from Inside PR magazine; and several awards from the National Association of Government Communicators and the International Association of Business Communicators.
Ms. Sun holds a B.A. from the University of Virginia and studied in the M.B.A. program at the Pace University Lubin Graduate School of Business, New York City.
She is serves on Virginia magazine's (University of Virginia) editorial board and U.Va.'s Alumni Diversity Advisory Committee. She serves on the Communications Committee for The Reading Connection, an Arlington, Va.-based nonprofit that supports reading skills for at-risk children. Ms. Sun is past Chair of the Asian and Asian Pacific American Alumni Network (University of Virginia) and former Vice-Chair of Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP), a national non-profit dedicated to growing leaders.
Ms. Sun is a graduate of Leadership Arlington and she and her husband are residents of the urban village of Clarendon.
