What I meant in that last post, if I wasn't clear, the local stores and restaurants had used their money with ads in the Post and elsewhere and didn't have even the small amount I wanted for an ad in my paper.

From the story: "The Local has encountered similar resistance to its two sites in blog-filled Brooklyn as well. "They're worried," explains the Local's Kelley, "about the big media companies coming in and taking up [their local sites'] advertising dollars."
That was my problem with the print edition of my blog--no money left for small ventures.

Good article! People are already trying to put the pieces together, but nobody's done it yet.

With thanks to Erica Kraus, who forwarded this to me, here is another article talking about the market for "hyperlocal" news.

Here's a link to that David Simon testimony...

Question: Does anyone know of an example of the kind of non-profit model he's talking about?

Here's another interesting article, from Slate, about the echos of earlier media battles. The point is that some of the same complaints now lodged against blogs were lodged by newspapers against radio.

You've seen the Podcamps that blogger Chris Brogan is involved in, right? I don't know Chris, but I follow his blog because it is one of the best out there on the new media space.

Just found out there's a new media unconference coming up in Pittsburgh: http://podcamppittsburgh.com/

I wonder if there's anything like that specifically for new bloggers?

I downloaded that recently, Steve, and I plan to listen, too. I think that collaboration tends to lead to greater good -- and greater revenue -- than sole effort.

My only concern with a group like this is we let proverbial cats out of bags, before any of us can make money! Still, I've listened on iPod to Free: The Future of a Radical Price, and I am embracing the "free," as much as I can. We'll see where this leads.
